Otto Simon has commenced work on the Battery 1 Hot Idle at Appleby Coke Ovens.
Part of a large-scale capex investment across the site, the Battery 1 Repair and Refurbishment Project is set to increase coke production and improve British Steel’s sustainability. The project will tackle essential battery repairs and refurbishment across a 40-week hot idle programme, improving the structural integrity of the battery and allowing all 33 ovens to return to full operation.
Commissioned in 1984, Battery 1 has suffered from some deterioration as a result of demand variations and operational events, leading to a reduction in weekly output. Battery 1 produces metallurgical coke for British Steel’s Blast Furnace team to use in the iron making process at the heart of British Steel’s operations. With Battery 1 back in full operation; British Steel’s operation can hope to increase production, sustainability and reliability.
OSL’s Operation & Maintenance team has extensive experience of working on the British Steel site and we’re excited to build on our experience from the Battery 3 Hot Idle Project to help deliver this programme in partnership with British Steel.
