Working with LDPE

Having worked on the design of many of the most recent world scale LDPE facilities using licensed technology, Otto Simon engineers have a detailed knowledge of LDPE technology. This includes integration of these developments into new build plants and refurbished plants for both tubular and autoclave applications. 

Many design aspects are unique to an LDPE plant and they require special attention and consideration during the design phase. 


Some typical examples include the compressor foundation design and performance, correct consideration and design to resist forces in the main process piping, intercoolers, reactors, and vent systems. It is important that the design coordination between all the involved parties are correctly considered and managed throughout the design process. Our specialist LDPE engineers are experienced with managing all technical post order activities for high pressure and specialist process equipment.


The characteristics and potential for decomposition of ethylene at high pressure require specialist knowledge. Incorrect consideration of these aspects can result in an installation suffering poor performance and excessive downtime for the plant’s entire operating lifetime.

ICI Technology

Our Engineers have been intimately involved with ICI’s High Pressure LDPE Technology for over 30 years and have helped numerous clients with process improvements and debottlenecking. 


ICI high-pressure technology is still a world-scale process route for Autoclave technology. 

Otto Simon acquired the Alkathene Technology Library in 2018. This Library includes all of the most up-to-date technical information for developments with ICI’s autoclave technology, putting us into a unique position to support on-going ICI licensees around the world.


We have excellent relations with the local original equipment manufacturers and can assist in the procurement of spares and latest developed equipment for the ICI Process.

Independent Testing & Inspection Services

Otto Simon offers fully independent inspection and testing services within Europe and globally to LDPE plant operators and engineering companies. The service is tailored to the specialist nature of LDPE equipment, and is supported by a combined in-house experience of the LDPE industry in excess of 100 years; covering Process, Mechanical, Control and Instrumentation disciplines.


From new equipment workshop inspections to witness and peer review of specialist pulsation and mechanical analysis of pipework and structures, we can offer independent verification of the full spectrum of LDPE related engineering activities.
