Otto Simon Working with Enerkem to Build Advanced Biofuel Plants

Otto Simon Ltd has signed a direct agreement to support Enerkem; a leading Montreal based waste to biofuels and advanced chemical company, in the design and construction of two ground breaking biofuel projects in Canada and the US.

Each project will employ Enerkem’s thermo-chemical gasification and catalytic synthesis technology to convert diverse feedstock’s including sorted municipal solid waste, construction waste and treated wood to produce methanol, ethanol and other specialty chemicals.
The facility design has been standardized and is based on high level of modularization for rapid market penetration.

Drawing upon their owned experience in associated processes Otto Simon will complement Enerkem’s own in-house operations group, providing value added engineering and project delivery support.

Otto Simon secured the position alongside Enerkem following a period of interaction in which synergies were identified. Otto Simon is also working with Enerkem on behalf of a project developer at an advanced stage in applying Enerkem’s gasification technology on a waste to energy plant in the UK.

The appointment in support of Enerkem continues Otto Simon’s progressive success in supporting project developers/investors and their delivery expectations in the emergent new fuels and energy sectors.

Gasification, Heat Recovery and Power Generation Facility in Scotland
Otto Simon is the Clients Engineer and is providing specialist process engineering support for the Dargavel Energy from Waste Facility located close to Dumfries in Scotland.

Ascot Environmental are the main contractor for Scotgen (Dumfries) Ltd who own the site. Scotgen intend to install an initial waste fuel capacity of 40,000 tonnes per year but with the technology being modular in nature this can be scaled to the full planning limit of 60,000 tonnes in the future.

The process chosen for the advanced thermal treatment is a sequencing batch gasification system sourced through Planet advantage Ltd. There will be two trains of equipment initially. Each will have 4 primary gasification chambers and one secondary combustion chamber, a boiler and gas cleaning. A common turbine will be used for both streams and will provide approximately 6 Mw of electricity.
